Saga Continues: Will Municipal Paid Sick Leave Ordinances Prevail in Texas?

State lawmakers who oppose municipal paid sick leave ordinances suffered a blow recently when their proposed legislation overruling the local mandates failed to pass. Governor Greg Abbott didn’t convene a special session, which ruled out the possibility of reviving the bills. And while the fate of Austin’s paid sick leave ordinance remains undetermined, cities like San Antonio and Dallas have enacted similar ordinances that are expected to go into effect in less than two months. All eyes are now on the Texas Supreme Court. The outcome of the looming legal battle over the Austin ordinance will certainly affect the future of the San Antonio and Dallas ordinances, along with any others that may arise in other cities.
